What it does
ChordGen is a browser studio for building, editing and previewing chord progressions, then exporting them as MIDI. Songwriters and learners can choose a key and style, change individual chords and take the editable harmony into their music software without creating an account for the manual tools.
Keep control of the harmony
Start with a key, major or minor mode, style, tempo and progression length. The studio shows chord names, constituent notes and Roman numerals, so you can connect the sound to its position in the key.
- Build four- or eight-chord progressions and replace individual chords from the available key list.
- Keep selected chords while generating new choices for the rest.
- Change each chord’s duration and use undo or redo while working.
- Audition individual chords or the progression through the browser.
- Try an alternative progression, copy the chord names or export MIDI.
MIDI export can put all notes on one track or split the lowest note of each chord into a bass track. The remaining notes go to the chord track, with timing retained. Choose instruments after importing the file into your DAW or notation software. The exported notes remain editable.
Free manual tools and optional AI
Manual generation, playback and MIDI export are free, with no account required. The site describes those operations as local to the device. A browser capable of audio playback is needed for listening.
The separate AI Composer requires Google sign-in and an available credit. It proposes musical direction and chord variations for you to review before applying them. It does not supply a finished song with recorded vocals and a complete audio performance. The paid offer uses one-time credit packs rather than a subscription, and purchases appear only when the payment service is available. The manual studio remains usable without it.
AI results have a short recovery window, so save or export anything you want to keep. The terms allow progressions and MIDI exports in your own projects, while noting that suggested material may resemble common musical patterns.

Alternatives to ChordGen
Hookpad is an external browser alternative for composing chords and melodies together, with visual music-theory guidance. Consider it when a progression needs to become a larger melodic sketch.
Scaler 3 is a listed alternative for exploring harmony and arranging editable chord and MIDI material in a more extensive production workflow.
