What it does
Scaler 3 combines chord detection, progression building, MIDI editing and arrangement tools for songwriters and producers. Work from played notes, MIDI or audio, then develop harmonies and performances in its standalone app or plugin. The desktop version is paid, with a temporary trial.
Turn a progression into parts
- Detect chords and scales from MIDI or audio.
- Build progressions with chord suggestions and voice-leading options.
- Explore related keys, chord substitutions and modulation pathways.
- Develop chord, melody, bass and phrase lanes on the Arrange timeline.
- Use Motions to turn chords into performances, then edit the notes and their timing.
- Build song sections with Scenes and audition different arrangements.
- Host compatible instruments and effects, or send MIDI to sounds elsewhere in your setup.
Scaler can play its internal sounds while you write. You can also drag MIDI into your DAW or route it to another instrument. Choose the workflow that leaves the notes editable where you plan to finish the track.
Choose the right plugin and routing
The instrument version can play sounds and detect MIDI or audio. The audio version simplifies detection from an audio track. ScalerControl is intended for hosts that support AU MIDI-controlled effects, such as Logic Pro. It controls another instrument rather than playing Scaler's internal sounds itself.
Check the routing before recording. The official FAQ notes that leaving Bind or DAW Sync active can make dragged MIDI behave differently or trigger material twice. The standalone app is another way to develop ideas before taking them into a DAW.
Compatibility and purchase
Scaler 3 desktop supports 64-bit Windows and macOS, with native Apple Silicon support. The published formats are VST, VST3 and AAX on Windows, with AU also available on macOS.
A paid licence is required after the fully functional 14-day trial. Downloads and activation use a Scaler Music account. Scaler 3 for iPad is sold separately and is not included with the desktop purchase.

Alternatives to Scaler 3
- Hooktheory includes Hookpad, a browser-based chord and melody sketchpad with theory guidance. Consider it when you prefer composing outside a plugin and exporting ideas afterward. MIDI export requires its paid Standard tier.
- Cthulhu (official external site) is a more focused chord-memory and arpeggiator plugin. It suits producers who mainly want to trigger chord progressions and turn them into rhythmic MIDI patterns.
