What it does
Vital is a wavetable synth with visual modulation, sample-to-wavetable conversion and MPE support. It gives producers a way to build and shape their own sounds, with a free Basic tier that includes the full synth and a smaller bundled sound library.
Shape the sound and see the modulation
- Warp a wavetable's harmonics to change its timbre.
- Turn samples into wavetables or draw new material in the wavetable editor.
- Drag modulation sources onto controls and preview their effect before committing.
- Shape movement with envelopes, custom LFOs and randomized sources.
- Use velocity, aftertouch and MPE to make a patch respond to your playing.
- Load microtuning files for music outside standard twelve-note tuning.
The animated displays let you follow waveforms, filters and modulation while you edit. That makes Vital a practical option for exploring how a patch works as well as making new sounds.
Free Basic and paid bundles
Basic includes the full synthesis engine. Plus and Pro add larger preset and wavetable collections, while a subscription is also available. Pro and the subscription include unlimited text-to-wavetable requests. Text-to-wavetable is an online service with a daily allowance on other tiers.
An account is required to download the official build. Presets have their own licence, separate from the synth's open-source code.
Compatibility and setup
Vital supports 64-bit Windows, macOS and Linux, including Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The published requirements include OpenGL 3 or later, so check graphics compatibility as well as your operating system before installing.

Alternatives to Vital
These links go to the developers' official sites.
- Surge XT is a free alternative with several synthesis methods, wavetable oscillators, MPE and microtuning. Consider it when you want to explore a broader hybrid synthesis engine.
- Serum 2 offers a paid sound-design workflow with wavetable, sample, granular and spectral oscillator types. It is worth comparing when sample manipulation and synthesis need to live in the same instrument.
